The History of Fort Riley

Fort Riley was built in 1853 and named in honor of Major General Bennet C. Riley. Originally constructed to assist traders along the Santa Fe Trail, it soon became a prominent U.S. Cavalry post after the Civil War. It was once home to General Custer and later the site of the United States Cavalry School. Fort Riley also hosted the all-black 9th and 10th Cavalry regiments and was affected by the 1918 Spanish Flu.
